Dec 31, 2024 · Under the influence of prevailing trade winds [tropical easterlies], the north equatorial current and the south equatorial current start from the eastern pacific (west coast of Central America) and traverses a distance of 14,500 km moving from east to west.

That is because ocean currents are driven (in part) by winds. The north easterly trade winds push the North Equatorial Current across the Pacific from east to west and the northern westerlies push the North Pacific Current back across the Pacific from west to east.
