Healthcare in the United States is complex. The healthcare industry employs millions of workers providing billions of services each year. In 2016, there were 626 health systems in the United States. About 12% of systems offer a Medicare Advantage plan (Figure 1).

Our study (1) enumerates the number of health systems in the United States; (2) characterizes systems by key structural attributes such as size, ownership, system type, and geographic presence; and (3) reports system penetration among hospitals, beds, and physicians.
