Recordings of all the Beethoven symphonies with their chief conductor are always a milestone in the artistic work of the Berliner Philharmoniker. So it was with Herbert von Karajan and Claudio Abbado, and expectations are correspondingly high for this cycle conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.

There’s no question that Rattle has assembled a Beethoven cycle that is well played, well recorded, and has plenty of character. Several of the performances are outstanding, most are good, and only the Sixth is what I would call a failure.

Rattle’s white-hot vision injects these scores with a level of vigour that I have seldom heard elsewhere on disc. In particular he relishes the punch and excitement of Beethoven’s rhythms.

Rattle owes a great deal to both a new performing edition of the symphonies, which adds considerable clarity (especially to the woodwind) in Beethoven’s scoring, and an awareness of period style, although without the pitfall of unquestionable servitude to it.

Though Beethoven styled his third movement as a Menuetto it’s a prototype scherzo and, like most conductors, Rattle plays it as such. The performance is very dynamic with the accents acutely observed and the timpani – played with hard sticks - making a strong impression.
