The Last of Us season 2, episode 6 brought Pedro Pascal's Joel back for an hour of flashbacks, and the show marked his return in a clever way.

Episode 6 was full of flashbacks, but one took us back a bit further than the others. The episode opens in 1983, when Joel and Tommy are teenagers. Joel is trying to cover for Tommy so he doesn't get in trouble with their dad, and this results in Joel and his dad having a conversation at their kitchen table.

Episode 6 introduces new scenes between Joel and Ellie to tell a gentler story than the game — recalling the first season’s famously tender Bill and Frank episode.

Enter Season 2, episode 6, an installment of The Last of Us that alleviates my season-long quibbles for one heartbreaking hour. The episode reunites Joel and Ellie in a series of flashbacks spanning years, reminding us of both how impeccable Pascal and Ramsey's chemistry is and how much more well fleshed-out Jackson is compared to Seattle.
