Indian benchmark indices Nifty 50 and Sensex ended the previous trade session in the red. Nifty 50 closed at 22,119.30, while Sensex ended at 73,085.94. Overnight, Wall Street indices crashed post Trump tariffs.

India’s market capitalisation-to-GDP ratio has been volatile, plummeting to 57 per cent (of FY20 GDP) in March 2020 from 80 per cent in FY19 and then sharply reviving to 132 per cent in FY24.

Sensex and Nifty indices dropped following weak global market trends, FII outflows, and U.S. tariff concerns. The BSE Sensex declined, with major stocks like Nestle India lagging, while others like State Bank of India gained.

The Nifty 50 is set to record a 10-day losing streak, which will mark the longest daily losing-run in the last 29 years.

The stock market opened into the red as the trading session began on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, with IT, telecom, and real estate stocks falling the most. The Sensex, Nifty drop follows global stocks that fell after US President Donald Trump said his proposed tariffs would go into effect as planned.

The 30-share BSE Sensex opened below the 73,000 mark at 72,817.34, down 268.6 points from the previous session’s closing. The broader Nifty 50 index opened at 21,974.45

Indian stock markets witnessed a continued selling spree on Tuesday as both benchmark indices opened in the red, reacting to global concerns over slowing economic growth in the US and the impact of new tariffs imposed by former US President Donald Trump.

The trends on Gift Nifty also indicate a gap-down start for the Indian benchmark index. The Gift Nifty was trading around 22,093 level, a discount of nearly 167 points from the Nifty futures’ previous close.

The stock market went into the red despite early trade showing positive signs. Mid and small cap IT, telecom, and financial services stocks, along with media stocks fell the most. At 10:50 am IST, the benchmark BSE Sensex fell by 208.
