A federal judge has ordered that Rümeysa Öztürk — a Tufts student who was arrested by immigration officers last month — be returned to Vermont to have her unlawful detention petition decided.

Rümeysa Öztürk was arrested by federal immigration officers on March 25 in Somerville, Massachusetts. She has not been charged with a crime.

A Tufts University student from Turkey being held in a Louisiana immigration facility must be returned to New England no later than May 1 to determine whether she was illegally detained for co-writing an op-ed piece in the student newspaper,
