The wreck of a US warship sunk in a World War II battle dubbed one of the bravest ever stands by a US Navy vessel has been found in the depths of the Pacific, US and Australian officials announced Monday.

The close proximity to Japanese forces infuriated Japanese Vice Adm. Chuichi Nagumo, resulting in him instructing Japanese forces to attack the vessel, according to a Naval History and Heritage Command account by director Samuel Cox.

The discovery, announced Monday, has revealed the resting place of more than 200 servicemen who died three months after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The Navy destroyer was sunk in 1942 during World War II, after facing down overwhelming odds and fighting a pitched battle.
