Named after the first American to orbit Earth, the New Glenn rocket blasted off from Florida, soaring from the same pad used to launch NASA's Mariner and Pioneer spacecraft a half-century ago.

New Glenn, however, would not be as powerful as SpaceX's next-generation Starship, a fully reusable rocket system in development that Musk sees as crucial to expanding Starlink's footprint in orbit.
