One of Iceland 's most popular tourist destinations, the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, posted on its website that it was temporarily closed due to a magma intrusion.
Residents of the mostly abandoned fishing village refused to leave even as molten rock approached their homes.
The magma flow began at about 6.30am local time accompanied by an intense earthquake storm similar to previous eruptions, Iceland's Met Office says.
