Met Éireann, the Republic of Ireland's national meteorological service, said that the country had faced wind gusts of 114mph in County Galway– the highest recorded wind speeds ever recorded on the island.

The storm brought record-breaking winds as it battered Ireland, Scotland and northern England on Friday. Hundreds of thousands of electricity customers were in the dark.

Gusts of up to 114mph have struck as Storm Eowyn made landfall in Ireland and the UK. But as the howling winds started to subside mid-morning, residents in Lahince appeared relieved that they had not inflicted more damage.
