WASHINGTON (7News) — On Sunday, the Washington Capitals will face the New York Islanders on the road. Alex Ovechkin is currently tied with Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer. Now, he could stake his claim as the league's top scorer if he lights the lamps against New York.
With Gretzky in attendance, Ovechkin gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead at 3:52 of the first period when his one-timer from the bottom of the right circle hit the left post, then deflected off goalie Spencer Knight ’s back and into the net.
The 5-1 win for Carolina included 142 combined minutes of penalties — 122 of which came in the third period — including two fights and six misconducts.
Washington Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson is expected to miss at least a couple of games because of injury, coach Spencer Carbery said Friday.
