Puerto Rico has had chronic outages due to hurricane damage and a lack of maintenance and investment in its power grid.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — An island-wide blackout hit Puerto Rico this week, leaving 1.4 million customers without power and more than 400,000 without water. It was the second massive outage to hit Puerto Rico since New Year’s Eve, when a blackout left 90% of clients without power.

LUMA Energy, the company that controls the power grid in Puerto Rico, said that almost 99% of customers have had their electricity turned back on. About 1.4 million people have had power restored, but some people may see service interruptions because of limited electric generation, ABC News reported.
