Despite President Donald Trump’s calls to “drill, baby, drill,” many oil companies operating in the Gulf of Mexico will likely do what they’ve done for years: sit on hundreds of untapped oil leases across millions of acres.

To put that in perspective, New Orleans is on the same latitude (or at least the northern hemisphere equivalent) as Coffs Harbour on the New South Wales Mid North Coast. As most Aussie know, Coffs Harbour is the home of the Big Banana and would never, ever see snow.

The cold temperatures are coming from a not uncommon expansion in the Polar Vortex, which are counter-clockwise rotating air currents that typically hang over the Arctic.

For example, Lake Charles, La., along the Gulf Coast, showed snowfall rates of over 1 inch per hour this morning and early afternoon and visibility down to a quarter of a mile with blowing snow. This is one of the reasons why blizzard warnings were posted briefly for that region earlier.

“Just like hundreds of other meteorologists today, I am speechless,” one wrote, sharing a video clip of whiteout conditions on Pensacola Bay Bridge in Florida. The city of Milton, Florida, reported 9.8 inches – probably the state’s biggest daily snowfall on record.

Google said it would rename the body of water to “Gulf of America” after it is updated in the U.S. government system in response to Trump’s executive order.
