Officials at the California Department of Education are standing defiant in response to the threat President Donald Trump may try to strongarm states into changing school curricula. The order in question seeks to punish schools for lessons that involve race,

State officials and leaders of county offices of education and school districts speak out against quickly Trump administration’s new guidance allowing immigration enforcement near or in schools.

The orders seek to encourage “patriotic education” and restrict discussions about racism and gender by threatening to withdraw federal funding. But schools are often resistant to change.

The White House also announced that Trump signed an executive order aimed at “ending radical indoctrination in K-12 schooling.”
