Air traffic control staffing issues are cascading into major delays for passengers flying in and out of the busy Newark airport outside of New York City for an unprecedented fifth day in a row.

United Airlines is canceling 35 daily round trip flights from Newark, N.J., starting this weekend after a group of air-traffic controllers walked off the job.Chief Executive Scott Kirby said Friday the decision came after 20% of the Federal Aviation Administration controllers at Newark Liberty International Airport left their posts due to long-simmering issues with the FAA.

Delays at Newark Airport are continuing today, as the FAA blames equipment issues, staffing shortages and runway construction.
