Video footage captured by Scott Malis during the volcano's 11th episode shows lava spewing out of Kilauea volcano and spinning into the air.

Kilauea is in a unique phase of activity in Halema‘uma‘u, with 12 episodes of dual lava fountains since Dec. 23, 2024.

A stunning scene was caught on video in Hawaii, showing hot gases and lava swirling into the air, forming a rare lava tornado. The footage, filmed by Scott Malis, captures a funnel-shaped vortex resembling a dust devil—a common wind phenomenon that is smaller and less intense than a tornado.

Lava flowed from Kilauea volcano amid its renewed activity in Hawaii. The U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory team reported that only weak vent activity was observed during their helicopter monitoring pass over Kilauea's summit at 8 am HST on March 4.
