Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) slammed the single bill the Florida legislature took up out of session, claiming it sets up Florida to become a “defacto sanctuary state.” DeSantis called the Florida legislature to meet in a special session to begin supporting President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

Ron DeSantis promised Wednesday to veto a sweeping immigration bill, in the latest escalation of a statehouse showdown between the governor and the state's Republican legislative leadership, who have sparred over whose proposals would best carry out President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he’ll veto an immigration bill passed by the Republican-led legislature, dismissing it as too “weak” and accusing lawmakers of watering down efforts to crack down on illegal immigration.

DeSantis said that the Legislature’s bill “fails to honor our promises to voters, fails to meet the moment, and would actually weaken state immigration enforcement.”

Even as DeSantis called the new bill "weaker," legislative Republicans pushed their legislation through the committee process Monday.
