The brand-new Los Angeles Times artificial intelligence feature didn’t exactly get off to the best start. The long-touted feature named “Insights” launched this week for the paper’s opinion articles and is designed to “offer readers an instantly accessible way to see a wide range of different AI-enabled perspectives alongside the positions presented in the article.

Billionaire owner Patrick Soon-Shiong championed the feature as “the next evolution of the LA Times,” stating in a letter to readers that it would provide an “instantly accessible way to see a wide range of different AI-enabled perspectives alongside the positions presented in the article.”

The Los Angeles Times removed its new AI-powered “insights” feature from a column after the tool tried to defend the Ku Klux Klan. Columnist Gustavo Arellano’s Feb. 25 column reflected on Anaheim’s history with the hate group after the city’s council did not acknowledge the 100th anniversary of booting four Klan-affiliated council members from the group.
