WellSpan has metal detectors in some settings, including the emergency department at York Hospital, because of the high traffic, the release states. The hospital also has armed, on-duty police officers working with the staff, and security uses handheld wands when it is warranted.

WellSpan is implementing enhanced security measures across all facilities in light of the deadly mass shooting that broke out at UPMC Memorial in York County.

The new security measures include shutting down certain entrances/exits at WellSpan facilities, the company said.
