Buffy Sainte-Marie was stripped of the Order of Canada following reports that the 83-year-old singer-activist fabricated her Indigenous background.

OTTAWA — Buffy Sainte-Marie’s Order of Canada has been terminated, with history of her ever having been appointed scrubbed online. Notice was posted on the government’s official publication late Friday that Governor General Mary Simon had cancelled Sainte-Marie’s Order of Canada through an order she signed in early January.

The Canadian government did not share its reasons for the decision, but it follows an investigation that shed doubt on the Oscar-winning singer's claims of Indigenous roots.

Marie’s Order of Canada has been terminated. The singer-songwriter was appointed back in 1997, and a reason has not been given for the stripping of the honor.
