The visit by PM Modi is the first visit by a Prime Minister of India to Nigeria in 17 years. India and Nigeria have been strategic partners since 2007.

Nigeria will confer its second-highest national award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his first official visit to the country.

This honour, reserved for exceptional global leaders, has previously been awarded to only one other foreign dignitary—Queen Elizabeth II in 1969.
