Earth has temporarily gained a second moon, an asteroid named 2024 PT5, which was captured in its orbit on September 29, 2024. This "mini-moon," measuring around 37 feet in width, will orbit the planet for nearly two months before returning to space on November 25.

Earth will briefly host a new visitor, asteroid 2024 PT5, from September 29 to November 25. Originating from the Arjuna asteroid belt, this mini-moon was detected by NASA in August. Although it won't be visible to the naked eye,

Mini-moon will not complete a full orbit. Instead, it will experience a slight gravitational pull from Earth before continuing its journey through the solar system.

For a short time, dear Luna has a friend. The asteroid 2024 PT5 spans just 33 feet (10 meters) and won’t even orbit Earth entirely.

It's thought the asteroid will circle Earth until the end of November, before moving on to other parts of the Milky Way.
