All the roads in New Zealand are good, the weather is the unpredictable part. If you are going to Greymouth there is high roads that can be affected by snow so just check the forecast on Metservice first. Otherwise the Tranzalpine rail service goes to Greymouth. It is a little expensive but spectacular scenery, especially during the snowy months.

We want to spend a few days exploring Milford & Doubtful Sounds, plus this National Park... what is the best locale to base ourselves in.. ... Te Anu? (We cannot afford the beautiful Milford Lodge). We will have own transport and expect to 'day trip' out from a home base.
