I don't think it is ground as fine as play sand so should work better. Just be sure to rinse it really really well before putting it in the tank. I have pool filter sand in all my tanks.

WEBDec 1, 2006 · I just picked up a 50LB bag of Pea Gravel from Home Depot for $2.79. Extremely dirty out of out the bag, but after a lot (and I mean A LOT) of rinsing, it looks great. Thanks for the idea and tips.. I'm only using a small amount (for now), but even so, can't beat the value. Prices for 'aquarium gravel' at a fish store are downright ludicrous.

Fill the jar 3/4 with water 1/4 with your dust and leave room to shake the mixture. Put cellophane over the top before putting the lid on.

I put fluval stratum on top of that with crushed or broken up root tabs, then cap it all with sand (you can use pool filter sand, aquarium sand, or I've found very small gravel to work as well 1.5mm or smaller).
